Does the conversion preserve the original formatting?

The tool extracts the text along with page breaks; complex formatting (tables, columns, images) is not carried over as-is.

What about scanned PDF files?

Scanned files are images rather than text, so no text can be extracted from them — you will need an OCR tool.
